Le Temps Des Cathédrales Translation-ish
So, quite a while ago I set out to do a translation/revamp of the English lyrics for "Le Temps Des Cathédrales" (actually, I think the original is one of the better English translations but still... that doesn't say much).  I think my initial intention was actually to do a serious translation, but within one line it dissolved into sillyness (as things do!), so it ended up being a parody instead.  Anywho, I just rediscovered it on my hard drive and was mildly amused by it.  Hopefully, you will be mildly amused by it also.

There are goat references....

The Age of Abstract Staging

Far back in medieval times,
Speckled with lots of silly rhymes,
Comes our tale of skirts and clerics,
Complete with senseless lyrics.

The name's Gringoire, poet sublime,
With a body that's just divine,
Sorry ladies, my clothes stay put,
Less you're a furry goat...

From somewhere came the age of moving pillars
Truncheons, crowd barriers,
History from a different planet.
We shall simply call it artistic license
Age of abstract staging
It is nineteen ninety nine.

You are lucky, this song-lecture
All on Gothic architecture,
Takes two minutes to sum ages
of long descriptive pages.

I've nothing more to really say,
Never had anything anyway,
I'm a sub plot, just narrator,
A background character.

From somewhere came the age of moving pillars
Truncheons, crowd barriers,
History from a different planet.
We shall simply call it artistic license
Age of abstract staging
It is nineteen ninety nine.

Bet you wish you saw this musical in French
Franco-phobic fools.
With monosyllabic rhyming
It's true English kills this musical stone dead
A wise man once said,
Should have seen Les Mis instead.
Should have seen Les Mis instead.

A work of sheer genius.
Goats will tremble…

Yes: if only the team who reworked Les Mis into English had done NDdP!

Thanks! "Rework" is the word. Alas, there was very little "reworking", only dry translating with a horrible French-doesn't-work-in-English rhymne scheme applied. I mean, really, there is only so many times you can rhymne "hell" and "bell" together before it descends into plain childish writing...

Le sigh. If only it had gone into the hands of the team behind Les Mis. But even then the source musical lacks all wit, which is so important if you want a musical to work for an English audience.
